You’ve probably seen those gorgeous chia pudding breakfast bowls light up your Instagram feed but it’s not just because they are photogenic. Chia seeds pack some superfood nutritional punch and they can be added to food and drinks. Once popular with long distance runners they are now a very popular superfood and easy to find in grocery stores.
These tiny seeds have the ability to absorb water turning into a gel like form when soaked in a liquid. This unique ability helps to maintain the body hydrated making them very popular with endurance athletes. They also help to slow the digestion of carbohydrates which helps to sustain energy levels, again a reason they are so popular with athletes. The benefits don’t stop there, they also contain high levels of Omega 3s and are rich in calcium. These little powerhouses also pack an easily digestible source of protein and fiber.
You can mix them with yogurt, sprinkle on cereals, add to baked goods, and smoothies. One of our favorite ways to use them is to add an extra nutritional kick to fresh juices. You only need a tablespoon mixed with 4-6 ounces of juice for a nutritional boost.
Here are two amazing chia recipes. One for a refreshing Agua Fresca and one for a morning chia pudding.
STRAWBERRY CHIA AGUA FRESCA
We love strawberries here at the Beautyjuicer. They are sweet and juicy and match our logo! Agua Frescas are refreshing fruit drinks made simply of fruit blended with water, seeds and a bit of sweetener. They’re popular in Mexico and Central America and are very hydrating. Here we used strawberry but feel free to experiment with fruits of vegetable juices of your choice.
2 cups water
2 teaspoons chia seeds
1 cup of strawberries
1/2 fresh lime peeled
1 tablespoon raw honey or agave
Place the water and the chia seeds in a bowl and mix together. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes in order for the chia seeds to become gelatinous.
Place the strawberries and lime in the Beautyjuicer and press the “juice” button to juice. Mix the chia mixture and the juice with some sweetener if desired and mix again. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with mint or basil.
