3 Ways to be Green this Earth Day
We all inherently want to conserve this beautiful earth that we live on, and not just on Earth Day but everyday. We choose to eat healthy fruits and vegetables and get outside to enjoy exercising in the fresh air. Being “green” or environmentally friendly is easy to do and can become part of your everyday routine, something that is automatic and you don’t need to think about. Here are some tips to help you go “green” this Earth Day and beyond.
3 Tips to be Green
- Choose to make your juices and smoothies at home in your own juicer and blender. Not only is it less expensive than purchasing individually bottled juices and smoothies but you are saving the environment by reducing the waste that comes from all those plastic bottles that your juice or smoothies comes packaged in. Consider also the shipping of all those bottled juices and smoothies to your local supermarket. Shipping means either by air or by truck and that equals more fossil fuels being burned and contributing to global warming. If you are short on time and prefer to purchase your juices and smoothies already made, a juice bar is a better option, since they make it on the premises. Ask your local juice bar if their cups are recyclable or better yet, bring your own! Don’t waste the leftover residue from juicing, there are so many ways to use it like in baking or as body scrubs. You can even use it as compost!
- Choose organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible and available. Using organic produce in your juices and smoothies ensures better health for you and for the planet. Organic fruits and vegetables are not grown using pesticides. Pesticides not only linger on the produce itself but also run off into lakes and streams and eventually the ocean causing a multitude of problems to the ecosystem and may end up back in our drinking water!
- Try to cut down on the amount of packaging used on your beauty products. This is a bit more difficult to put into place as packaging is an integral part of any cosmetic product. Contact your favorite brands to see if they will recycle your containers or if they are recyclable. MAC cosmetics collects empty containers through their Back to MAC program and you get a free lipstick for every 6 containers returned. Another way to reduce plastic container waste is to make your own beauty treatments. There are hundreds of great DIY face mask recipes on the internet. Try the Beautyjuicer which allows you to make skin care from fresh fruit and vegetable juices, which means no individual wrapping like on traditional sheet masks and also no shipping. You can make it in your own home whenever you need one.
Those are just a few tips that can help us continue to keep this planet we live on beautiful.
Happy Earth Day!
